Violet and Xaden have ruined me. That’s all. That’s the review.
I finished this book almost two weeks ago, and I’ve had a brutal book hangover ever since. I moped. I re-read Fourth Wing. I re-read most of Iron Flame. And honestly, I’m still in awe that a book series is done so well that it can affect me so completely.
Yarros does an excellent job furthering the character arcs started in Fourth Wing. The stakes are higher, the choices are more difficult, and still, you’re rooting for it all to work out. The world-building is done in such a way that it reminds me of video game maps, where the further you go, the more you understand and see. The dragons (and gryphons) become an even larger part of the story, as do all of the Sorrengails. And then there’s shadow-wielding, second signet Xaden. And a throne. I need not say more.
I truly didn’t want to love this series. And I was sure the second book couldn’t possibly be as good as the first. But it was even better.
