Let me start by saying this: I read a lot of dark romance. Because I read a lot of dark romance, I anticipate and pay attention to trope and content warnings.
Here’s why I tell you this, dear reader. I picked up this book, anticipating essays regarding racism in modern-day corporate America. While Prescod does cover the above topic, I was unprepared for the deep and constant conversation regarding eating disorders and weight obsession. Do those topics fit into a conversation about the push to “fit into” the perfect white model mold? Yes. I just didn’t see it coming and I’ll be honest, it forced me into internal conversations I wasn’t quite prepared to have yet from my own past/present.
Prescod tells her story honestly and with no apologies, and for that, I thank her. I want to do my part to be a better ally and help break centuries of an awful cycle. Just know what you’re getting into before you open the first chapter.
