The midpoint of Holmberg’s delightful Whimbrel House series in no way feels like the transition book that can sometimes plague other series. Instead, the reader travels outside of the previous Whimbrel House set, learns about some surprising magical families, and gets even more deeply involved with Owein and Merritt than before.
As always, Hulda and her wit help save the day, and readers will be thrilled to know we finally get some relief to her and Merritt’s story. And that relief is a good thing, because the emotional roller-coaster that is Owein’s story in this piece of the story brought me to tears more than once.
I adore Holmberg’s story-telling style – she brings humanity to magic in the time before big technology. It’s a heavy read that also tells a complete story in <500 pages, which is a welcome trait in the fantasy world-building that can be encyclopedic.
