Spells for Forgetting

4/5

Another triumphant story from Adrienne Young, as she switches genres effortlessly, moving from fantasy to a modern day mystery set on an island off the coast of the Pacific Northwest.

The setting is rustic and witchy, and is written in such a way that I was easily transported back to the small towns of my late teen years, with tea shops and eyes always peering out of windows. The main characters are rich and fractured, and written in such a way that you’re rooting for them before you even understand why.

What seems like a story quickly turns into a mystery, with Young dropping massive reveals at subtle moments, and twists at the end that might have kept me up until the wee hours to get to the final pages.

While I appreciate the way Young tells stories from multiple viewpoints, this one did feel like there were a few too many narrators, which is why I ended up not rating 5 stars.

All in all, a stunning read that keeps Young’s brilliant status as a must-read author cemented.
